When you create a trust, there are numerous decisions that you must make. One of the most important decisions is who you nominate as the trustee. Each trust is unique and each person who creates a trust will choose a trustee for different reasons; however, there are a few common factors that you should take into consideration before you choose your trustee.
- Location of Trust Assets: This is a practical consideration that may people fail to consider. If your trust contains tangible assets, such as real property, the location of the trust assets is important because the trustee is responsible for overseeing the assets. Your trustee needs to be located near the assets in order to perform this responsibility well.
- The Purpose and Complexity of The Trust: A simple trust, such as a pet trust that has as its sole purpose funding the care of a pet after your death may be relatively simple to administer. A complex trust, such as a charitable trust, on the other hand, can be extremely complicated to administer, requiring a more experienced trustee.
- Relationship of the Trustee to the Beneficiaries: Appointing a family member may offer the benefit of knowing the trustee well, and provide you with a certain degree of trust in your trustee; however, consider the relationship of the intended trustee to the beneficiaries of the trust. Ask yourself whether you could foresee a conflict of interest as a result of that relationship, or whether the trustee has a financial interest in the trust assets as a result of the relationship. Often, appointing a family member actually comes with more potential risk than gain.
- Financial Ability and Experience: Whether your trust assets are minimal or extensive, the purpose of the trust is to guard and grow those assets. Be sure to choose a trustee who has the financial ability and experience to accomplish both of those objectives.

Former KHS coach was self-taught baseball player

Ronnie Battle always wanted to play professional baseball. His father was a semiprofessional baseball manager and team owner, and although Savannah High School didn?t have a baseball team, he said there was always equipment around the house for him and his brothers to play the game.
?I never played any high school sports,? he said. ?But I went to college and played baseball as a walk-on at Fayetteville State.?
The longtime American Legion coach, and retired Kinston High School varsity coach, went on to win a pair of NAIA national batting titles at Fayetteville State University.
?I was, more or less, a self-taught baseball player,? he said.
In 1974, Battle had a three-day tryout for the New York Yankees. After what he called two of the best days of baseball he had ever played, he injured himself tracking a fly ball.
?My dreams melted away when I ran into the wall at Grainger Stadium,? he said of the 18-month recovery after being knocked unconscious. ?My mom told me, ?Maybe the Lord didn?t intend for you to be a baseball player,? and I didn?t want to hear it.?
The following year he started his career at J.H. Sampson as the elementary school?s first, and only, physical education instructor ? the school closed in 2003.
In 1975, he joined the baseball staff at Kinston, and by 1980, Battle was the head coach.
?I decided (if I couldn?t play baseball) I wanted to help make good citizens and good people in Lenoir County,? he said. ?I know that those kids (I?ve coached), I?ve helped influence them.?
During his nearly three decades of coaching high school baseball, Battle was a member of an extremely small group of coaches. At one point, of the 446 high schools in the state, he was one of only four African-Americans heading up a varsity squad.
?It was very different,? he said of the experience. ?The majority of the times I always felt comfortable but I would go places and there were times when I would get treated like a stepchild.?
Battled recalled a playoff game in Brunswick County in his final season when the opposing coach wouldn?t even speak to him.
?He looked at me and gave (Chris) Hatcher the game ball and then turned and walked away,? Battle said. ?But it?s something that made me a stronger individual ? knowing that I?ve been able to persevere.?
Battle has seen five of his players drafted to play professional baseball and more than 60 have played college baseball ? including five Division 1 players on his final 2003 roster.
?I remember them being a bunch of fun-loving kids,? he said.

Do-it-yourselfers have made everything from bamboo bicycles to 3-D printers, but nothing as ambitious as what's happening on a farm in northwest Missouri where tractors and other industrial machines are being made from scratch.

Marcin Jakubowski earned a Ph.D. in physics, and his doctoral thesis deals with velocity turbulence and zonal flow detection, whatever that is. But when Jakubowski graduated in 2004, he wanted nothing to do with physics or academia.
"I was so disillusioned and disenchanted with that whole world, I wanted to leave it as soon as possible," says the 39-year-old Jakubowski. "So the first thing I did after graduation is settle on some land and started getting dirty."
Jakubowski moved to Missouri, where he eventually bought 30 acres in the town of Maysville. He grew wheat, raised goats and tended a fruit orchard. But then one day, his tractor broke.
"I came from an institution of higher learning, so I had no practical skills," he says. "I picked up a welder and a torch and started using it."
Jakubowski actually made a tractor from scratch, using square steel tubing that he bolted together.
"A tractor is basically a solid box with wheels, each with a hydraulic motor," he says. "So, conceptually, it's actually very simple. And when I first did it, it was like, 'Wow, a tractor' ... I was amazed to find this actually works."
Jakubowski says the experience of making his own tractor transformed him and he set about designing and building affordable alternatives to industrial machines. The documentation and design is made available for free online as part of his Open Source Ecology project.
Jakubowski plans to prototype several dozen machines, including a wind turbine, cement mixer and sawmill. He refers to them collectively as the Global Village Construction Set.
Attracting Other Builders
Last year, Jakubowski was named a TED Fellow by TED, the non-profit foundation that gathers innovators from the worlds of technology, entertainment and design. Videos of the TED Fellow talks are popular on the Web and Jakubowski's is no exception. Subtitles for his video have been translated into 41 languages and has drawn kindred spirits to the farm in Missouri.
"I believe that the heart of economic democracy is decentralized productive power spread throughout the populace," says 18-year-old Yoonseo Kang from Mississauga, Ontario.
A robotics wiz in high school, Kang decided to forgo college and instead move to Jakubowski's farm, where he's working on a machine that mills printed circuit boards.

Briana Kufa, 20, of San Diego, is a certified welder who's been studying architectural engineering in college. Kufa came to the farm to build something called a compressed earth brick press, which churns out bricks made from dirt on site. She built four of them.
"It's a lot of cutting, a lot of welding, a lot of torching and that's basically all the skills you would need to make one of these," Kufa says. "I could probably teach someone how to do those things in a day."
Commercially manufactured earth brick presses sell for tens of thousands of dollars, but Jakubowski says his open source version can be built for about $4,000 in parts. There is extensive documentation online, including a step-by-step assembly video.
Some of the compressed earth brick presses made at the Open Source Ecology farm have been sold to people who will build homes with them. In Cedar Creek, Texas, a compressed earth brick press was built from scratch by Creation Flame, a spiritual group.
"I saw [Jakubowski's] TED Talk back in May and it was like, finally, for the first time in my life I knew what I had to do," says James Slade, who helped put the press together. "It was like, I'm on a mission from God. I have to do this."
It took Slade weeks last summer to replicate the compressed earth brick press but he says that when the first bricks rolled out, it was like giving birth.
"I come from the software world. I didn't know how to weld. I hadn't had much machining experience," he says. "You know, it took some learning. We made some errors, but if I can do it, just about anybody can do it."
One of Jakubowski's colleagues in the TED Fellows program is planning to use the open source earth brick press and tractor to build a village for displaced Guatemalans.

Returning to the opportunity to unearth influencers from your prospect pool, the fact is that influencers, specifically individuals with lots of experience in the markets that you wish to enter, and experience gained at the level of a decision maker represents a very valuable lead for your business. This type of individual can quickly instill the trust that other prospect will require as a preliminary to any serious discussion about your product for a possible need.
Obviously I have lots of experience on this topic having spent almost a decade in the executive search and contract consulting business for technology targeted to global business. (Reuters) ? Albert Haynesworth, once one of the National Football League's (NFL) most feared and best paid defensive linemen, was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team said on Wednesday.
Haynesworth, who was claimed by Tampa Bay off waivers after being released by the New England Patriots in November, had 20 tackles in seven games for the Buccaneers last season.
"I appreciate Albert playing for us after some key injuries this past season," Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said in a statement. "He was very professional and we now wish him all the best as he moves forward."
Haynesworth was taken with the 15th overall draft pick in 2002 by the Tennessee Titans, where he spent seven seasons and developed into one of the NFL's premiere defensive tackles and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2007 and 2008.
He then signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Washington Redskins ahead of the 2009 season but failed to perform up to expectations.
Following several run-ins with Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and issues about conditioning, Haynesworth was traded to the New England Patriots last season but was placed on waivers after six games.
