American Samoa on a roll with 2-game unbeaten run

updated 9:04 a.m. ET Nov. 25, 2011

APIA, Samoa - Two days after winning for the first time in its history, American Samoa's national soccer team stretched its unbeaten run to two games.

After Tuesday's 2-1 win over Tonga, the team earned a 1-1 draw with the Cook Islands on Thursday. Another win against rival Samoa on Saturday will put the U.S. protectorate into the second round of World Cup qualifying in the Oceania region.

American Samoa coach Thomas Rongen, a former Ajax player and veteran MLS coach, says "we made it very hard for ourselves again but we got the result we needed to make the game against Samoa, who I consider the best team here, a meaningful contest."

Researchers create spinal cord connectors from human stem cells, heralding breakthrough

It's taken many years and more than a bit of brainpower, but researchers at the University of Central Florida have finally found a way to create neuromuscular connectors between muscle and spinal cord cells, using only stem cells. Led by bioengineer James Hickman, the team pulled off the feat with help from Brown University Professor Emeritus Herman Vandenburgh, who collected muscle stem cell samples from adult volunteers. After close examination, they then discovered that under the right conditions, these samples could be combined with spinal cord cells to form connectors, or neuromuscular junctions, which the brain uses to control the body's muscles. UCF's engineers say the technique, described in the December issue of the journal Biomaterials, marks a major breakthrough for the development of "human-on-a-chip" models -- systems that simulate organ functions and have the potential to drastically accelerate medical research and drug development. These junctions could also pay dividends for research on Lou Gehrig's disease or spinal cord injuries, though it remains unclear whether we can expect to see these benefits anytime soon.

(AP Photo/Sebastian Scheiner)

(AP) ? Newly found coins underneath Jerusalem's Western Wall could change the accepted belief about the construction of one of the world's most sacred sites two millennia ago, Israeli archaeologists said Wednesday.

The man usually credited with building the compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary is Herod, a Jewish ruler who died in 4 B.C. Herod's monumental compound replaced and expanded a much older Jewish temple complex on the same site.

But archaeologists with the Israel Antiquities Authority now say diggers have found coins underneath the massive foundation stones of the compound's Western Wall that were stamped by a Roman proconsul 20 years after Herod's death. That indicates that Herod did not build the wall ? part of which is venerated as Judaism's holiest prayer site ? and that construction was not close to being complete when he died.

"The find changes the way we see the construction, and shows it lasted for longer than we originally thought," said the dig's co-director, Eli Shukron.

The four bronze coins were stamped around 17 A.D. by the Roman official Valerius Gratus. He preceded Pontius Pilate of the New Testament story as Rome's representative in Jerusalem, according to Ronny Reich of Haifa University, one of the two archaeologists in charge of the dig.

The coins were found inside a ritual bath that predated construction of the renovated Temple Mount complex and which was filled in to support the new walls, Reich said.

They show that construction of the Western Wall had not even begun at the time of Herod's death. Instead, it was likely completed only generations later by one of his descendants.

The coins confirm a contemporary account by Josephus Flavius, a Jewish general who became a Roman historian. Writing after a Jewish revolt against Rome and the destruction of the Temple by legionnaires in 70 A.D., he recounted that work on the Temple Mount had been completed only by King Agrippa II, Herod's great-grandson, two decades before the entire compound was destroyed.

Scholars have long been familiar with Josephus' account, but the find is nonetheless important because it offers the "first clear-cut archaeological evidence that part of the enclosure wall was not built by Herod," said archaeologist Aren Maeir of Bar-Ilan University, who was not involved in the dig.

Josephus also wrote that the end of construction left 18,000 workmen unemployed in Jerusalem. Some historians have linked this to discontent that eventually erupted in the Jewish revolt.

The compound, controlled since 1967 by Israel, now houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the golden-capped Muslim shrine known as the Dome of the Rock. The fact that the compound is holy both to Jews and Muslims makes it one of the world's most sensitive religious sites.

The dig in which the coins were discovered cleared a Roman-era drainage tunnel that begins at the biblical Pool of Siloam, one of the city's original water sources, and terminates with a climb up a ladder out onto a 2,000-year-old street inside Jerusalem's Old City. The tunnel runs by the foundation stones of the compound's western wall, where the coins were found.

The drainage tunnel was excavated as part of the dig at the City of David, which is perhaps Israel's richest archaeological excavation and its most contentious.

The dig is being carried out inside the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan, and is funded by a group associated with the Israeli settlement movement that opposes any division of the city as part of a future peace deal.

The excavation of the tunnel has also yielded a Roman sword, oil lamps, pots and coins that scholars believe are likely debris from an attempt by Jewish rebels to hide in the underground passage as they fled from the Roman soldiers.

Lawsuit over 'Jew or not Jew' iPhone app dropped (AP)

PARIS ? French anti-racism groups dropped a lawsuit Thursday against Apple Inc. over an iPhone app called "Jew or not Jew?" after it was removed from circulation worldwide.

Lawyer Stephane Lilti, representing four anti-racism associations, said the decision was "motivated by the removal of the application in all countries of the world."

Lilti said at a hearing in a Paris court Thursday that the app's designer, Johann Levy, decided to remove it. Lilti said while the groups agreed to drop the lawsuit, their complaint "had beneficial effects."

Representatives of Apple in France would not comment on the decision, nor did a lawyer for Apple at the hearing, Coline Warin.

The app let users consult a database of celebrities and public figures to see if they are Jewish or not. The app was selling for 0.79 euro cents in France, but was removed from the French online App Store after anti-racism groups initially complained about it in September.

The app remained available outside France, however, selling for $1.99 through Cupertino, California-based Apple's U.S. App Store.

SOS Racisme, MRAP, the Union of Jewish Students of France and a group called J'accuse joined in a lawsuit against Apple, arguing that the app violated France's strict laws banning the compiling of people's personal details without their consent.

Under the French penal code, stocking personal details including race, sexuality, political leanings or religious affiliation is punishable by five-year prison sentences and fines of up to euro300,000 ($411,000).

Such laws were enacted in the decades following the Holocaust, which saw some 76,000 Jews deported from Nazi-occupied France to concentration camps. Fewer than 3,000 returned alive.

In an interview published in September, app developer Levy said he developed the app to be "recreational ... as a Jew myself I know that in our community we often ask whether a such-and-such celebrity is Jewish or not," Levy was quoted as saying in the daily Le Parisien.

Apple has removed numerous apps from the App Store since it launched in mid-2008 for violating the myriad restrictions it imposes on developers.

Higher prices don't deter Thanksgiving travelers (AP)

CHICAGO ? Whether on the highway or at home, Americans will pay more to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. But higher gas prices and costlier airfare are not stopping millions of people from traveling for the holiday.

About 42.5 million people are expected to drive, fly or ride trains to their Thanksgiving destinations, according to travel tracker AAA. That's the highest number since the start of the recession.

Ninety percent of them will hit the road, and it won't be cheap. Drivers will pay almost 20 percent more for gas, which has reached an average of $3.42 a gallon.

Air travelers have been hit, too. The average round-trip airfare for the top 40 U.S. routes is $212, up 20 percent from last year. Rail tickets on most one-way Amtrak trips have climbed 2 to 5 percent. Hotel and motel rates are also up slightly.

George Gorham and his fiance, Patricia Horner, weren't deterred. They flew across the country to visit Gorham's son at North Carolina's Fort Bragg. They used frequent-flier miles and planned to visit tourist attractions in the nation's capital along the way.

Horner said they still would have made the trip without the miles, but "it would have been more painful."

Some motorists who tried to get an early start along the Pennsylvania Turnpike found themselves stopped by ? or stuck in ? a gooey mess after a leaking valve on a tanker truck spread driveway sealant along nearly 40 miles of highway. Officials said at least 150 vehicles were disabled and an unknown number of others were damaged Tuesday night.

"Now we have to turn around and go back home," Laura Frick, who was traveling from Cleveland to New Jersey for the holiday, told WTAE-TV. "It's horrible."

Turnpike workers who peeled up the sticky puddles, then covered them with sand to hasten drying, had traffic moving normally again by Wednesday morning.

Travelers also were at the mercy of the weather.

Heavy rains and scattered thunderstorms prompted flood warnings and closed some roads across swaths of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York early Wednesday. Snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain to make for treacherous driving and thousands of power outages across parts of New England and upstate New York.

Flights arriving at Philadelphia International Airport early Wednesday were experiencing delays between 30 and 45 minutes "and increasing" due to low cloud cover, but the Federal Aviation Administration reported few other early disruptions.

Plenty of people also were staying home.

Damian Buchwald of Buffalo, N.Y., picked up a second job earlier this year. His new work schedule has helped pay the bills but leaves him without time to travel to Connecticut to spend the holiday with his wife's family.

This year, the couple and their teenage son, Raven, will celebrate Thanksgiving with his mother, neighbors and friends in town.

"When you can't travel and people can't travel to you, you gather your closest friends. And that way nobody has to pay an arm and a leg, and everyone can eat well," Buchwald said.

But having relatives over for dinner is becoming more expensive, too.

A 16-pound turkey and all the trimmings will cost an average of $49.20, a 13 percent jump from last year, or about $5.73 more, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation, which says grocers have raised prices to keep pace with higher-priced commodities.

In Pawtucket, R.I., Jackie Galinis was among those looking for help to put a proper meal on the table. She stopped at a community center this week seeking a donated food basket. But by the time she arrived, all 300 turkeys had been claimed.

So Galinis, an unemployed retail worker, will make do with what's in her apartment. "We'll have to eat whatever I've got, so I'm thinking chicken," she said.

Then her eyes lit up. "Actually, I think I've got red meat in the freezer, some corned beef. We could do a boiled dinner."

Carole Goldsmith of Fresno, Calif., decided she didn't need to have a feast, even if she could still afford it.

Goldsmith, an administrator at a community college in Coalinga, Calif., said she typically hosts an "over-the-top meal" for friends and family. This year, she canceled the meal and donated a dozen turkeys to two homeless shelters. She plans to spend Thursday volunteering before holding a small celebration Friday with soup, bread "and lots of gratitude."

"I think everybody is OK with it," she said. "They understand. Everybody is in a different place than they were a year ago."

HIV Patients at Heightened Risk for Certain Cancers (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Nov. 22 (HealthDay News) -- A weakened immune system and unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking put HIV-infected patients at increased risk for cancer, according to a new study.

The researchers also said that starting antiretroviral therapy at an earlier stage of HIV infection might reduce cancer risk.

The primary goal of the study, one of the first to compare the risk of cancer in HIV-infected patients, was to determine how much of the increased risk was the result of the disease and how much was due to other risk factors, such as smoking, the researchers said.

The study authors compared the rates of 10 types of cancer that occurred among HIV-infected patients and HIV-free patients from Kaiser Permanente in Northern and Southern California between 1996 and 2008.

Six of the cancers were more common in HIV patients than in HIV-free patients, including Kaposi's sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, melanoma, anal cancer and liver cancer. Lung and oral-cavity cancers were also more common among HIV patients, but most of the risk of those cancers appeared to be associated with lifestyle habits such as smoking.

Prostate cancer was less common in HIV patients than in HIV-free patients.

Further investigation suggested that a weakened immune system was associated with the increased risk of cancer in HIV patients.

"Taken together, we believe our results support cancer-prevention strategies that combine routine prevention activities, such as smoking cessation, with earlier HIV treatment to help maintain a patient's immune system," lead author Michael Silverberg, a research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, said in a Kaiser news release.

The study appears in the current issue of the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

Parents Accused of Starving Baby to Fend Off Obesity (ContributorNetwork)

A Wisconsin couple has been charged with one felony count of child neglect. Christopher and Mary Sultze, of Appleton, are accused of starving their baby to keep her from becoming obese, according to the AP.

The baby was born weighing a little over eight pounds. Allegedly the baby gained only five pounds in fourteen months. She was born in July of 2010 and weighed only thirteen pounds in September. One doctor said the baby had no subcutaneous fat, another said she would have to weigh twenty-two pounds more to make her age charts.

The baby's medical condition was a mystery to physicians when she did not gain weight. They tracked her progress, or lack of it, over months. The doctors ran tests to see if there was a medical problem that was interfering with her weight gain. After the baby was admitted to the hospital, she gained eight ounces in one day. The parents were extremely upset at the suggestion of feeding their baby more calories. The parents wanted to remove their girl from the hospital against doctors advice. The father said he did not want obese or fat kids, and he was afraid the baby would get fat at the hospital.

The father said he had a blocked artery at the age of 25. It is not clear if reports that large babies have a tendency to become obese, according to USA Today, made any difference in the parents starvation tactics. While no one wants an obese baby, it is not clear that large babies automatically go on to become obese. Doctors are not in total agreement about putting any baby on a strict diet, says MSNBC. Avoiding putting juice in bottles and having regular mealtimes with the whole family seem to indicate sensible ways to reduce undue infant weight gain.

Christopher Sultze, 35, was released on bond and was ordered to have no contact with the child involved. Mary Sultze, 36, waived a preliminary hearing, so she could continue caring for her other three children. She cannot have contact with the infant she is accused of starving. No report on the condition, age or weight of the remaining children was given.

The couple could face a year and a half in prison and $25,000 in fines.

A GOP debt plan would hit some popular tax breaks (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Millions of taxpayers who take advantage of deductions for mortgage interest, charitable donations and state and local taxes would be targeted for potential tax hikes under a GOP plan to raise taxes by $290 billion over the next decade to help reduce the nation's deficit.

Some workers could also see their employer-provided health benefits taxed for the first time, though aides cautioned that the proposal is still fluid.

The plan by Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who serves on the 12-member debt supercommittee, would raise revenue by limiting the tax breaks enjoyed by people who itemize their deductions, in exchange for lower overall tax rates for families at every income level. Taxpayers who already take the standard deduction instead of itemizing ? about two-thirds of filers ? could see tax cuts. The one-third of taxpayers who itemize their deductions might find themselves paying more.

The top income tax rate would fall from 35 percent to 28 percent, and the bottom rate would drop from 10 percent to 8 percent. The rates between would be reduced as well.

About 50 million households itemized their deductions in 2009, according to the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation. About 35 million households claimed the mortgage interest deduction, and 36 million deducted charitable donations. Nearly 41 million claimed deductions for paying state and local taxes.

A GOP congressional aide said the plan is designed to raise taxes on households in the top two tax brackets. That would affect individuals making more than $174,400 and married couples making more than $212,300.

Some Republicans say the plan offers a potential breakthrough in deficit-reduction talks that have stalled over GOP opposition to tax hikes and Democrats' objection to cuts in benefit programs without significant revenue increases.

But Republicans are becoming increasingly divided over the issue of raising taxes. A growing number of Republicans in Congress say they would support a tax reform package that increases revenues, if it is coupled with significant spending cuts, enough to reduce the deficit by about $4 trillion over the next decade.

The so-called "go big" strategy has been endorsed by a bipartisan group of about 150 lawmakers from the House and Senate. A rival group of 72 House Republicans sent a letter to the supercommittee Thursday, urging members to oppose any tax increases.

"We must recognize that increasing the tax burden on American businesses and citizens, especially during a fragile recovery, is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of the United States," said the letter, circulated by Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.

Democrats, meanwhile, have panned Toomey's plan, saying the rate reductions would cut taxes for the wealthy so much that taxes on the middle class would have to be raised. They also argue that Toomey's plan would generate less revenue than advertised.

They note that Toomey's plan assumes that tax cuts enacted under former President George W. Bush, and extended through 2012 under President Barack Obama, would continue. Toomey's plan would then cut the tax rates even more.

The supercommittee has a Wednesday deadline to come up with a plan to reduce government borrowing by at least $1.2 trillion over the next decade. If the panel fails, $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts to domestic and military programs would take effect in 2013.

Some details of Toomey's plan remain in flux, in part because he is open to changes to help forge an agreement, said the GOP aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations. The aide confirmed that Toomey's plan is closely modeled after a proposal by three experts at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a private research organization perhaps best known for deciding when recessions begin and end.

The three experts are Martin Feldstein, a Harvard University professor who was President Ronald Regan's chief economic adviser; Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget; and Daniel Feenberg, a research associate at the bureau.

Under their plan, the tax benefits from itemizing deductions and excluding employer-provided health insurance from taxable income would be limited to 2 percent of taxpayer's adjusted gross income.

That means if a taxpayer has an adjusted gross income of $50,000, deductions and exemptions could reduce his or her tax bill by a maximum of $1,000.

Taxpayers who face limits on their tax breaks could opt to take the standard deduction instead. Currently, about one-third of tax filers itemize their deductions. The rest claim the standard deduction, which in 2011 is $5,800 for individuals and $11,600 for married couples filing jointly.

The plan envisions millions of additional taxpayers switching to the standard deduction, which would simplify their returns, MacGuineas said.

Policymakers across the political spectrum agree the federal tax code is too complicated, and most agree on a basic formula for simplifying it: Reduce tax breaks and use the additional revenue to lower the overall tax rates for everyone.

There is little agreement, however, on which tax breaks to target.

Toomey's plan attempts to sidestep debates over which tax breaks to target and instead proposes to limit taxpayers' overall ability to reduce their tax bills.

"This is a far more practical way to start to scale back the influence and costs of tax expenditures in the code by kind of glopping them together and capping them," MacGuineas said. "You're not picking the winners and losers."

Soundproof Your Apartment With a Bit of Weatherproofing Tape [DIY]

Soundproof Your Apartment With a Bit of Weatherproofing TapeIf you're like me, you like loud music...but your neighbors probably don't. Steve Guttenberg over at The Audiophiliac shares a few tips for isolating sound on the cheap.

A truly soundproof room can cost thousands of dollars, and while you won't be able to keep all that noise out with the DIY method, you can certainly do a lot to help. One of the best things, Steve says, is using some weather-stripping foam tape on your doors:

I've used weather-stripping foam tape around the top and sides of a doorframe to create a better air seal that will limit the amount of sound that comes through a door. On the bottom of the door I've attached a plastic "door sweep." You'll need to set the sweep to just barely brush the floor as it closes to reduce the size of the gap between the door and saddle. The foam tape and door sweep will reduce the amount of sound that leaks out through the door; the better the seal, the less sound will leak through. Installed with care the sound reduction will be significant from those two tweaks.

Isolating the sound that escapes through your door can do a lot, and you can get a similar rubber pad to keep your subwoofer from rumbling your downstairs neighbors. Of course, with the perfect pair of headphones, you can stay truly silent for your neighbors?but we understand that sometimes you just need to blast it. Hit the link for more DIY sound isolation tips, and share your own in the comments.

BP loses two oil spill rulings

    November 16, 2011

NEW ORLEANS ? BP has lost two big rulings in its fight to shield itself from potentially having to pay billions of dollars more in damages related to the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that BP is not entitled to coverage for the spill under insurance policies totaling $750 million held by Transocean Ltd., owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig that BP was leasing at the time of last year's Gulf of Mexico disaster.

"Because Transocean did not assume the oil pollution risks pertaining to the Deepwater Horizon incident ? BP did ? Transocean was not required to name BP as an additional insured as to those risks," U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier wrote in his ruling. "Because there is no insurance obligation as to those risks, BP is not an 'insured' ? for those risks. Therefore, BP is not entitled to the declarations of coverage it seeks."

    Transocean praised the ruling.

"The court's decision speaks for itself, and if you work for Transocean, it's a great read to boot," spokesman Brian Kennedy said of the insurance ruling.

BP said Tuesday that the insurance ruling didn't in any way address the causes of the accident or who would be held ultimately responsible in court.

The same judge ruled Monday that Alabama and Louisiana could pursue punitive damages against BP and other companies ? a decision that was not a total victory for Alabama and Louisiana. Barbier dismissed some claims in the lawsuits that were based on state laws.

He said federal laws should be sufficient for the states to recover the costs of removing the oil.

A civil trial over hundreds of spill lawsuits is scheduled for February to assign shares of fault to the companies involved and determine whether Transocean can limit what it pays those making claims under maritime law.

    Amazon Kindle Fire

We interrupt our regularly scheduled Amazon Kindle Fire review for this timely editorial.

I'm really not a tinfoil hat type -- maybe a little too much on the other side of that spectrum, actually. But I'm really not crazy about how Amazon's shipping the Kindle Fire. Here's how it works: You order a Kindle Fire from Amazon, they ship it to you. You open the shipping box, and then the specially designed, "Certified frustration-free packaging" (which is pretty cool and mostly frustration-free). Unwrap the Kindle Fire, turn it on and connect to Wifi.

And find that you're already logged in, password and everything, ready to purchase books, magazines, apps and music.

    This is not good.

Oil price again flirting with $100 per barrel (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices climbed to near $100 per barrel Tuesday on encouraging news about the U.S. economy.

Benchmark crude rose $1.23 to end the day at $99.37 per barrel in New York. The benchmark price hasn't been that high since July 26. Brent crude, which is used to price many foreign oil varieties, climbed 50 cents to finish at $112.39 per barrel in London.

Prices jumped after the Commerce Department said that retail sales rose in October for the fifth straight month. Consumer spending increased for electronics, appliances, hardware and building supplies. Sales also rose at grocery stores, bars and restaurants and health care stores.

"If people are opening their pocket books again, it's good for the economy. Maybe you'll see gasoline demand go up," said Phil Flynn, an oil analyst at PFGBest.

Inflation also eased last month, as companies paid less for gas, new cars and other goods.

The European Union also said that the 17-nation bloc avoided recession in the third quarter. The eurozone economy grew by 0.2 percent in the July-September period. However, it's still expected to shrink as countries like Italy and Greece cut spending to reduce debt.

A stalled European economy means that world energy demand could drift lower. But analysts say that most oil traders have already priced in the potential for a slowdown in the eurozone.

Meanwhile, retail gasoline prices in the U.S. slipped less than a penny to a national average of $3.41 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. Gasoline prices are about 52 cents higher than the same time last year.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose less than a penny to end at $3.1713 per gallon, and gasoline futures rose 5.04 cents to finish at $2.5857 per gallon. Natural gas gave up 5.4 cents to finish at $3.4040 per 1,000 cubic feet.

    Downtown Business Owners Protest Obama-Endorsed #Occupy ...

Despite the months-long cries from taxpaying, hardworking producers, the morally bankrupt and depraved Mayor of New York, Ground Zero mosqueteer Bloomberg, is putting New Yorkers at risk by sanctioning the lawless moochers and looters. The park is a pigsty, disease and filth abound, the cops are on overtime and businesses are suffering. Doomberg calls this free speech. The intepretation of these protests as symbolic of free speech is wrong. There is a distinction between speech and action. They do not have the right to co-opt and take over public parks or shut down public streets.

It is public property. They do not have the right to do what they want with it whenever they want.

And thanks to the Mayor, the invading occupiers #OWS 'leaders' announced today their plans to rachet up their wild antics ? vowing to wreak havoc on Thursday by shutting down Wall Street and the subways to mark the renegade group?s two-month takeover of Zuccotti.

According to their Web site, the day will include ?Mass, Non-violent Direct Action? to ?Shut Down Wall Street? at 7 a.m., ?Occupy the Subways? in all five boroughs at 3 p.m. and ?Take the Square,? referring to Foley Square, at 5 p.m.

One protester said the plan to ?Occupy the Subway? is an effort to bring the OWS message to the outerboroughs.

Mayor Bloomberg dismissed the notion that Wall Street, for one, would be shut down.

?The New York Stock Exchange will open on time. People will be able to get to work, you can rest assured,? Hizzoner said.

Bloomberg reiterated his support for the protesters? right to free speech but said he was aware that business owners ? about 10 of whom rallied against the protest today at City Hall ? have legitimate complaints.

?We?re not going to allow people to stop commerce and to stop people?s right to go around and express themselves. No one group has the right to protest. They all have the right to protest,? Bloomberg said. (Fox Nation)

Downtown Business Owners Say Occupy Wall Street Protests Hurt Their Revenue NY1

A half-dozen Lower Manhattan business owners gathered by City Hall today speak out against the Occupy Wall Street protesters, saying the ongoing protest has hurt their revenue.

For almost two months, more than 100 protesters have camped out at Zuccotti Park.

Nearby eatery owners said while the Zuccotti Park demonstrators are calling for job creation, their constant presence has actually resulted in job losses for the businesses.

"People who are working for us have a right to their jobs, and you can't go and usurp other people's rights. That's a problem," said Marc Epstein of the Milk Street Cafe. "Right now, we've laid off 25 of the 70 who are at risk. This doesn't make any sense."

While activists get ready for winter, some of the businesses around the park know that season is usually the slowest time of the year for revenue.

"We're frustrated because this situation does not seem to be going to go away," said Stacey Tzortzatos of Panini Cafe.

A spokesperson for Occupy Wall Street, Patrick Bruner, blamed police barricades for the loss of foot traffic and said other businesses are doing better because of the encampment.

    Urban Infidel has this:?

Tonight I went to the press conference for New York businesses against OWS Zucotti Square on the steps of City Hall.

A group of local business owners and residents organized a press conference to express their thoughts on evicting the squatters currently occupying Zucotti Square. Over the last two months the zoo-like atmosphere, the crime, the drumming, the garbage, the smell and lawbreaking has cost local businesses nearly $500,000.00 and workers are being laid off.

$250,000 grant will further stroke rehabilitation research

West Orange, NJ . November 13, 2011. Kessler Foundation received a $250,000 stroke research grant from the Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Life Improvement. Anna Barrett, MD, director of Stroke Rehabilitation Research at Kessler Foundation, will apply the funds to finding better ways to treat hidden disabilities that often complicate recovery after stroke. "Our stroke researchers are pleased to receive this grant," said Rodger DeRose, president and CEO of Kessler Foundation. "The Wallerstein Foundation recognizes Kessler Foundation's commitment to improving rehabilitation after stroke, and is encouraged by the advances being made by Dr. Barrett's research team."

Paralysis and weakness are well recognized complications, noted Dr. Barrett, unlike hidden disabilities, which affect communication, memory, functional vision and perception of one's environment. Even people with mild strokes can have hidden disabilities that are highly disabling, causing problems with many functions including self care, driving, reading and navigating one's surroundings. Often overlooked, these disabilities prolong hospitalizations and rehabilitation and increase the risk for injury and other complications.

The grant is especially welcome in these days of increasing competitiveness for grant funding. "Because of the challenges we face with federal grant funding," said Barrett, "this generous gift from the Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Improvement is most significant. This enables us to continue our investigation of promising treatments for hidden disabilities after stroke."

One such therapy is prism adaptation therapy, which uses optical lenses to help correct a hidden disability called spatial neglect. Investigators at Kessler Foundation's Stroke Research Laboratory are studying which stroke survivors may be most likely to benefit from prism adaptation. "Effective treatments will increase independence, decrease falls and accidents, and reduce the burdens on stroke survivors and their loved ones in the future," said Barrett.

Anna Barrett, MD, is also a professor of physical medicine & rehabilitation at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ and Chief of Neurorehabilitation Program Innovation at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Range, NJ.

Siri Cracked Open, Theoretically Opening It Up To Other Devices (Or Even Android!)

siriServing as a stark reminder that there are people on the Internet who are way, way too damned clever, the guys over at the iPhone design/development house Applidium claim to have cracked open Siri to take an unsanctioned look at its (her? his?) inner workings. In a rare ? but quite welcome (I mean, by us. Probably not by Apple) ? move, they've gone on to do a rather detailed debriefing of how they got through. So, what does this mean to you? Theoretically, it means that support for Apple's voice-powered portable assistant could be hacked not only onto devices like the iPhone 4, but to anything from laptops to Android phones as well. As the italics on "theoretically" imply, though, there's a bit of a catch.

Eye on home, Obama heads for Asia-Pacific summit (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is jetting away from Washington's political and budget battles just as crucial decisions and deadlines approach, focusing instead on Asia-Pacific nations and trying to persuade voters at home the distant region is essential to American jobs and security.

Obama departed Friday for summits in Hawaii and Indonesia and a visit to Australia in between.

For nine days, the president will be as many as 10,000 miles from home at a time when jobs, the frail economy and other domestic concerns matter most to the U.S. electorate. But Asia and the Pacific region are crucial to America's future, the White House insists.

Obama was born in Hawaii, spent boyhood years in Indonesia and points to himself as America's first Pacific president, so his worldview is shaped deeply by Asia. His administration is showering attention on the region as a driver of global politics, a prized buyer of American products and a central player in protecting world peace.

"If you want America to be a world leader in this century, that leadership is going to have to include the Asia-Pacific," said Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser.

Such a focus is essential to American interests, analysts say, but still a test for a president who is seeking to govern and run for re-election at once.

The White House hopes the world will see Obama's trip as a pivot point in American policy, as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton put it. The war in Iraq will be over by year's end, the war in Afghanistan is winding down and Obama is trying to expand trade, security alliances and cultural ties with traditional allies and emerging powers across Asia.

The subtext of the trip agenda is Obama's intention to keep the United States as a viable counterweight to a rising China, particularly in the eyes of other leaders in the region.

The element Obama aides don't mention is the potential political cost of having the president out of the country, half a world away, as other debates rage back home.

The economy is king, from the presidential campaign to Obama's jobs fights to a legislative supercommittee charged with finding more than $1 trillion in cuts by a Nov. 23 deadline. Republicans and Democrats seem far apart, and there is growing pessimism they will succeed.

"I can see the domestic political advisers saying, `Ten days in the Pacific while people are out of work in the U.S. ? Mr. President, you ought to cut this one short,'" said Douglas Paal, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former national security aide to presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

White House officials say there are no plans to do that. A suddenly shortened trip would be seen as a slap to Asian allies, and the Australian leg has already been postponed twice because of higher-ranking domestic concerns for Obama.

En route to Hawaii, Obama planned to attend a Veterans Day basketball game in San Diego between Michigan State and No. 1 North Carolina on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson. That's the aircraft carrier that took Osama bin Laden's body to a burial at sea after American commandos killed the al-Qaida leader in Pakistan.

Over the weekend, the president will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, forum in Honolulu, to promote trade and jobs.

The big push for Obama will be establishing a Pacific-wide free trade zone that is now being negotiated by the United States and eight smaller economies.

The goal is for the trade zone to eventually cover a region accounting for more than half of global output. Japan's prime minister, Yoshihiko Noda, said Friday that his country would participate in talks about joining the free trade zone, and there are hopes that China and others will, too. The expectations at the Obama-hosted summit are not for a deal but perhaps the announcement of a broad framework and more discussions.

As usual, the more intense diplomatic action will happen on the sidelines. Obama will hold private meetings with the leaders of Japan, Russia and China.

Altogether, Obama will spend four nights in Hawaii and is expected to have a light schedule on Monday ? only a fundraiser, a reminder of the domestic politics that follow him.

In Australia, Obama will deliver a speech to Parliament in Canberra.

He is also expected to announce a deeper U.S. military footprint in the country during a stop in Darwin, in the northern reaches of Australia. The defense agreement is likely to include positioning of U.S. equipment in Australia, increasing access to bases and conducting more joint exercises and training.

More broadly, Obama will use the trip to try to reassure allies that the United States will not slash its security presence across the Asia-Pacific despite austerity measures at home.

Yet the threat of defense cuts is rattling Obama's own administration. If the deficit-cutting supercommittee cannot agree on a plan that wins approval from Congress, a new law calls for deep cuts across the government to kick in automatically starting in 2013, including more than $500 billion for the military.

The president caps his trip in Indonesia, where he spent four years as a boy.

Obama delivered a speech in the capital, Jakarta, last year in which he declared that "Indonesia is a part of me." This time he will be the first U.S. president to take part in the East Asia Summit, in Bali, known as a tropical paradise for tourism. The U.S. has put its stamp on the summit agenda in the area of security, including halting the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The trip amounts to Obama's most extensive travel of the year.

He leaves as his approval ratings have been mired in the mid- to low-40 percent range in many recent polls, including a 46 percent approval number in the latest Associated Press-GfK poll from mid-October. His overall rating outpaces his performance on the economy. On matters of foreign affairs, Obama fares far better, garnering the approval of about 6 in 10 adults.

Obama is expected to underscore the relevance of the trip to Americans by the day. He will be back in Washington on Nov. 20.

"This isn't a trip to the far-flung corners of Asia," said Daniel Russel, Obama's senior director for Asian affairs. "This is a trip to the Asia-Pacific. The U.S. is very much an Asia-Pacific nation. We're a resident power."
